Car rust repair – checking your paintwork

From  time when washing your car or checking your car paintwork you might notice small bubbles under the surface of the paintwork, these are the beginning of surface rust. It is not all that often in todays world that rust starts in the manufacturers paintwork, it is more often that surface rust will start in paintwork that has been repaired as not all car body repairs are done correctly.

Some car body repairers do not use the correct products or procedures when dealing with rust. Surface rust when caught early is quite and easy fix, just sand the rust out back to good shiney metal and use an etch primer followed by a 2k primer, then sand and paint the new paintwork.

Doing car rust repair that will last.

The only way to deal with surface rust repair is to sand it right out, that way it is gone forever but only if you recoat the bare metal with the correct products.

Before we applied a few good coats of 2k (a 2 part primer) on this rust repair, we gave it a single coat of Max meyer etch primer. Etch primer is a primer that normally has a small amount of acid in and it will actually burn its way into the bare steel, this is why it is called’ etch primer’ and why it is an excellent rust inhibitor.

With the car all 2k primed up and baked off in our low bake oven, we gave it a light sand down and got it ready for paint. It is important that a car rust repair is primed correctly and dried off with heat in an oven as you do not want to expose the bare metal to moisture, this is the very reason the surface rust started in the first place.

Some car body repairs centres do not have low bake ovens or air driers, the air used for painting is supossed to be dried before it goes through the spray gun. Non dried air has small amounts of water in it and that is what creates low standard car body repairs and car rust repairs as the moisture starts the rusting process. If left un checked surface rust will become more serious and will lead to the rust needing to be cut out like this Evo Lancer we completed a wheel arch rust repair on.
